Salburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg. It's around 3hr from Munich in Germany and an hour from Vienna in Austria. Salzburg's "Old Town" with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centers in the German-speaking world, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city is noted for its Alpine setting. It is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the setting for parts of the musical and film The Sound of Music, which features famous landmarks in Austria, but focuses mainly on Salzburg. The movie was based on the true story of Maria von Trapp, a Salzburg-based nun who took up with an aristocratic family and fled German occupation. Although the film is not particularly popular among Austrians, the town draws many visitors who wish to visit the filming locations, alone or on tours. Pictured is the city view with its top peak, the Festung Hohensalzburg, a castle that sits on Festungberg hill. With a length of 250 meters and a width of 150 meters, it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. The view from where I took the picture (from top of the Modern Art Museum) was simply breathtaking in winter. I could see the fortress overlooking the city from there. Amazing ... I spent hours there anjoying the view and forgot ... that the castle closed at 5pm and I needed to catch a train to Vienna at 8pm. So, I didnt manage to visit the castle ... I simply will have to come back next time :))
